motherhood: capturing content while traveling with kids.

Imagine having to capture content for a brand, that requires traveling with your children.

That was my dilemma.

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan.

I was excited for a number of reasons. The first one being visiting Michigan. Being from Ottawa, Ontario, I’ve driven through Michigan numerous times, but I’ve never had the opportunity to actually stop and visit. Not only would I be traveling to visit Kalamazoo, but I was also given the privilege to capture the city. My excitement came to a screeching halt when I realized, I had been tasked with the responsibility to represent Kalamazoo Michigan through my digital storytelling lens. I knew that my husband wouldn’t be traveling with us, and typically when we travel for business (or leisure) he is always on duty as my Instagram husband.

I had to remind myself that I’ve had two kids… and a few years of experience under my belt.… what’s shooting content without my husband.

Not only was I able to capture what was required of me, I was also able to enjoy myself and everything Kalamazoo had to offer. Recap of the trip soon come… but until then check out the tips below.

PLAN AHEAD

  1. I was blessed to partner with an agency that had a complete itinerary planned out for me. Because my itinerary was planned, it simplified my work.

I understand that you may not necessarily have the luxury of having your itinerary planned, if you don’t, I suggest taking the time to familiarize yourself with your destination prior to getting there in order to maximize your time and minimize stress.

STORYBOARD

  1. “storyboard” is a term used in pre-production - it’s a sequence of drawings that represent shots planned for television or movie production. It typically has some direction and drawings. If planning to shoot any video content, I do suggest loosely “storyboarding” - this also helps with planning static content - knowing what you’re going to create ahead of time is a game changer.

ACCESORIZE

  1. I typically travel with my husband and although he wasn’t present on this trip, I did have the privilege to travel with a friend who was able to assist me when help was needed. I also had my trusted accessory : my tripod. I rarely leave home without it. Tripods are a content producer’s best friend, especially ones that have remote control capabilities. They allow you to capture picture perfect moments with you in it. Amazon has a variety of affordable options when it comes to tripods. Get one that fits your needs and get to shooting.

Creatively yours,

Charlotte
