home: with Mitchell Black

We can all agree that there is no city quite like New York City… The sky scrapping architecture, the street style, the city’s never-ending ambiance…There’s none like it.

A few years ago, my husband and I flew to New York for a small weekend getaway and I was reacquainted with all the beauty the city has to offer including… wall paper.

Yes, you read that correctly, I said wall paper.

You see, when  we travel, we typically prefer airbnb’s to hotels. This go round was no different.

We opted for an Airbnb in Bed-Stuy, and it is there that my love affair with wall paper began! The apartment where we stayed had the prettiest accent wall which consisted of wall paper.

It has since been my mission to recreate something similar in our home.

And so here we are, 2.5 years later and I’ve finally made it happen with the help of Mitchell Black.

My husband has never been one to have much of an input when it comes to home decor. A bed, a couch and and a tv are enough for him… Me, not so much.

I will be the first to admit that though I like seeing homes with  bold and bright decor, I tend to take a minimalist approach in my own house.

But being that the whole purpose of an accent wall is to … accentuate, hubby and I decided to “live a little” by choosing something that wouldn’t be typical for us and we both agreed to go with the  HOLLY – JET BLACK .

We felt that the neutral colors would blend well with the furniture in our room and that the pattern would  “accentuate” the wall/room.

We also opted for the peel and stick vinyl, because why complicate things when there’s no need to.

We placed our order with Mitchell Black and the turnaround time was fairly quick. The strips got to us in  about 2weeks time. I’m not sure if this is the typical turnaround time for all their prints but it was for ours.

I’m so very thankful that when the strips arrived they were labeled “A” and “B”- being that it was my first time applying wall paper it helped  us differentiate and align the patterns correctly.

After watching a few Youtube Tutorials on how to apply peel and stick wall paper I was ready to go.

The whole process was fairly quick, it took a total of about 4 hours between, taking breaks and telling my little one to get out of the way.

If you’ve considered adding wallpaper to your home, here are a few things to consider.

  1. Make sure your wall is smooth. If you need to sand it down to ensure that it’s smooth, do it. Wall paper will not cover the bumps on your wall… it will accentuate them.

  2. If you choose peel and stick, be sure to PEEL AS YOU GO. If you remove the paper that covers the adhesive all at once, you risk having your paper bunch up. YOU DON’T WANT THAT.

  3. Be sure to have a smoothing tool, It helps with “air bubbles” and ensures that the finished look is … smooth.

  4. When I placed my order, I added an extra 10 inches to my measurements, I encourage you to do the same to leave room for mistakes.

  5. Have fun with it!

The pros of Peel and Stick:

  1. Quick and effective

  2. Minimum labor

  3. Awesome variety of styles

  4. Great for putting your personal touch if you’re renting.

  5. Easy to take off

  1. The vinyl had a strong smell, be sure to open your widows when applying.

  2. When working with patterns can be hard to perfectly align.

  3. Peeling off  prematurely may result in your paper sticking together

We’ve lived in our house for a little over three years now, and I’ve held off on making it our own for a number of reasons. One of them being that I want our home to represent who we are.

Come to find out, we are much bolder than we thought we were!
